Happy Armed Forces Day! ... And a Military Wife Giveaway

Happy Armed Forces Day to all military service members!

Here's a Little History Lesson (courtesy of defenseLINK.mil):
On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense. Each of the military leagues and orders was asked to drop sponsorship of its specific service day in order to celebrate the newly announced Armed Forces Day. The Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but supports Armed Forces Day, too. (Go figure... LOL!)

There were several purposes for holding Armed Forces Day. It was a type of "educational program for civilians," one in which there would be an increased awareness of the Armed Forces. It was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job is performed and the role of the military in civilian life. It was a day for the military to show "state-of-the-art" equipment to the civilian population they were protecting. And it was a day to honor and acknowledge the people of the Armed Forces of the United States.

According to a New York Times article published on May 17, 1952: "This is the day on which we have the welcome opportunity to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces ... to all the individuals who are in the service of their country all over the world. Armed Forces Day won't be a matter of parades and receptions for a good many of them. They will all be in line of duty and some of them may give their lives in that duty."

To everyone of you who have served both at home and abroad, THANK YOU for your service to our country!

Those of you who have ever had any ties to the military know it's just as difficult to be a military wife and raise a family while your spouse is away. So, I'd like to take this time to offer a giveaway to those who are often overlooked, The Military Wife.

The Giveaways:
First, let me state, for the record, that you do not have to be a military wife to enter. You can enter and give the prize away to a military wife that you know. However, if that is the route you take, you must still complete all entry requirements.

You have a chance to win one of 6 prizes in this one. And without further ado, here they are:
GRAND PRIZE - One winner will receive a "My Husband Is a Soldier" double-sided t-shirt. I created this t-shirt when my husband was in Iraq for his second tour. The front has an American flag ribbon and states, "My Husband Is s Soldier..." The back features a poem written by me about the pride of being a military wife, though at times it isn't easy. You will also receive a copy of "Email to the Front" by Alesia Holiday. This book chronicles a wife's correspondence to her military husband overseas. Additionally, you'll also receive printed copies of "Final Inspection" and "The Military Wife," two OUTSTANDING poems that any military family should read. (Total prize value - $27)

Bees-Tees... Character Building T-Shirts

I was reading a locally produced magazine during my lunch break one day and came across an article about a South Carolina mom-prenuer. Being in South Carolina myself, I am always looking for other SC moms to feature on BloggyMom.

Bees Tees founder, Melissa Patton, came up with the concept of Bees Tees as a way to connect with and teach her young daughter positive character building skills. How? In the morning, as you are dressing your child, you can share the motto for the day...and explain to them what it means. For example, "Bee Fair" means to share your toys and let everyone have a turn. As they wear their Bees Tees, throughout the day, it is a reminder of this life lesson from Mom.

Says Melissa, "I was a Mom looking for way to connect with my daughter on a daily basis about the things that matter in life; kindness, honesty, fairness & friendliness. I wanted a way to teach her through thoughtful conversation about positive character traits. Dressing Lena in a Bee-Tee gives me a teachable moment in the morning to explain that beeing kind means showing kindness to everyone and to back her bee through her daily actions. Hopefully others will see her wearing her bee, backing her bee and will catch the buzz for positive character building. ...there is a line of adult themes for us big kids. The adult Bees Tees urge others to bee creative, bee inspired, bee involved, bee active & bee unique. So check out Bee-Tees.com. And spend some moments inspiring yourself and your child to bee the best they can bee!"

Melissa was kind enough to send us a sample tee. It is truely adorable! The little Princess, who, at 2 thinks bees and ladybugs are cool anyway, was super excited. As I dressed her for daycare, we were able to have a discussion about what the slogan "Bee Fair" on her shirt meant.

I patiently explained to her that "Bee Fair" means to share and take turns with her little friends at school and to be nice to the babies. Being nice to the "babies' is a big one, as she goes to a home daycare and there are three babies there who have just started to crawl. This means that no 2 year old nor any toy in said 2 yr old's hand is safe. My little angel looked up at me with her big brown eyes and said, in the sweetest little voice, "No hit the babies, mama?" "Yes! That's what it means!" Mission completion!

Bees Tees are available in sizes 6 months through Ladies 2XL. You can choose between 13 different colors and 16 different bees. Available designs include: Bee Involved, Bee Friendly, Bee Honest, Bee Yourself, Bee Creative, Bee Humble. Each tee features a design on the left shoulder reminding you to "Back Your Bee."

To order your Bee-Tess, visit the Bees-Tees website here.

Book Review: The Noticer

I recently completed Andy Andrews' latest book, The Noticer.
I've never read anything by Andy Andrews and wasn't sure what to expect. The book jacket looked good and the plot summary sounded decent, so I decided to give it a try.

I would describe this book as "sweet." The plot was at times confusing and somewhat predictable. The message of the book- to always consider things from every perspective - made the book worth reading. Many times we get so caught up in ourselves and what is going on in our immediate world that we forget to communicate our needs and desires... we forget to think about the big picture. This story shows us how noticing even small things can make a difference in the course our life takes.

Do I think this book will win any literary awards? No.

Did I enjoy the book? Sure- it was a sweet, easy read. Great for a quick weekend read.

Can I think of a better book to read with the same message? Yes, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven.

The Noticer goes on sell today so feel free to pick up a copy, drink a glass of wine and read it on your sun porch as you watch your kids play in the backyard.

On another note, check out The Noticer Project, a worldwide movement to "notice" the 5 most influential people in your life! Noticing those five people is meant to encourage us to step outside our busy schedules and avoid waiting until a wedding, graduation or even a funeral to take notice of the special, influential people in our lives . . . What a wonderful concept! So check it back and come back and tell me your thoughts....there may be a giveaway in your future!

These are a few of my favorite things...

So, I decided to let you guys get to know a little more about me. At least once a month, I will share with you "a few of my favorite things..." (Does anyone know which movie that line is from?)

This month, let's talk candy. I love candy...all sorts of candy. I craved sweet things when I was pregnant. As it goes, if you crave sweets, you are having a girl. If you crave salty or spicy foods, a boy is in your future. I had a girl.

Back to the candy... here are my some of my faves:

Chocolate- I'm a huge fan of the Reese's Cup as well as the KitKat, but neither compare to the Twix bars! Chocolate, cookie and carmel...YUM!

Jelly Beans - As far as regular jelly beans, the white ones are my favorite. But my all-time favorite are JellyBelly Buttered Popcorn flavor! The taste and smell delicious! AND I recently discovered that you can buy a single bag of ALL buttered popcorn flavored Jelly Belly's!

My FAVORITE candy of ALL time- By far, hands down, are Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers! These are the BOMB! Nothing compares to these sweet yet tangy colorful worms! Often imitated, but never duplicated, the other brands don't taste anywhere close! I get these in my stocking at Christmas, instead of chocolate hearts at Valentine's Day, in my basket at Easter...you get the drift... I totally heart them!

Now it's your turn... leave a comment and tell me what YOUR favotire candy is! Who knows...maybe you'll get a special treat in the mail when you are least expecting it!
